Surrounded by the Occoquan and Potomac Rivers, this ecological treasure is a time capsule of natural habitats that are rare or nearly extinct in Northern Virginia. Visit this unique place to experience tidal shorelines, marshes, meadows, woods and all of the creatures that dwell on the banks of the Occoquan and Potomac Rivers. Once the home of Indians, then colonial farmers, today visitors to the Refuge see the ospreys and bald eagles that make the marshes their home. The refuge is home to 650 plant species, 218 bird species, 55 butterfly species and robust wildlife communities. The Refuge is open to the public Thursdays through Sundays from 7am-7pm (excluding hours of darkness). Permits with special conditions such as access during normally closed times or into restricted areas are available upon request for organized groups.
