Nearly 1,000 Hessian soldiers were captured during the American victory at Trenton, New Jersey, on December 26, 1776. Some of the officers were imprisoned here in Prince William County following Washington’s famous crossing of the Delaware River. Historian Ross Schwalm will tell the story of these prisoners’ travels, how they lived in Dumfries, their impressions of Virginia’s environment, and where they went after they left Dumfries.
