Prince William, Virginia's outdoor scene just received a major honor, just in time for Summer!

Earlier this month, Leopold's Preserve in Broad Run was officially designated a National Recreation Trail by the U.S. Department of the Interior, placing it among a select network of trails recognized for providing exceptional outdoor recreation opportunities across the country. The designation was announced as part of Great Outdoors Month and National Trails Day celebrations.

For locals, the recognition may come as no surprise.

Managed by the Northern Virginia Conservation Trust, Leopold's Preserve spans 380 acres of protected land and features seven miles of trails winding through forests, wetlands, meadows, and historic landscapes. The preserve has become a favorite destination for hikers, birdwatchers, photographers, and anyone looking to enjoy a peaceful escape into nature.

What makes Leopold's Preserve especially unique is how accessible it is! The relatively flat trail system welcomes visitors of all experience levels, making it easy for families, casual walkers, and experienced outdoor enthusiasts alike to explore the preserve. Along the way, more than 30 interpretive signs share stories about the area's wildlife, ecology, and history, turning every visit into an opportunity to learn something new.

Wildlife lovers will find plenty to enjoy as well. The preserve's diverse habitats support hundreds of species, making it one of Northern Virginia's premier birdwatching destinations. Visitors regularly spot everything from hawks and woodpeckers to migratory waterfowl throughout the year.

The national designation also highlights something Prince William residents and visitors have known for years: this region is home to some of the best outdoor recreation opportunities in Northern Virginia. From the trails of Prince William Forest Park and Manassas National Battlefield Park to waterfront adventures along the Occoquan and Potomac rivers, there is no shortage of ways to get outside and explore.

Now, Leopold's Preserve joins a nationwide network of more than 1,350 National Recreation Trails, helping put another Prince William, Virignia's outdoor destination on the map.
