When it comes to small-town charm, Occoquan, Virginia stands out and not just for its waterfront views and historic Main Street. If you've never taken a stroll through this little riverfront town, it is home to dozens of unique shops, galleries, eateries, and service-based businesses, and a remarkable number of them are led by women entrepreneurs whose creativity, passion, and community spirit help define the heart of Occoquan’s business community.

In fact, over 70% of them are women-owned! How crazy is that?

For Women’s History Month, we’re shining a spotlight on some of these inspiring women-owned and women-run small businesses that make Occoquan a great place to visit, shop, and support no matter what time of year.

Women-Owned Shops & Boutiques

Gift & Gather

One of Occoquan’s most beloved boutiques, Gift & Gather, was founded by Usa Leckenby in 2017 to showcase makers and creators from the DC-metro area. This beautifully curated gift shop features handmade jewelry, pottery, stationery, home décor, and more! Including locally made soy candles from the shop’s own brand, Pure Palette. It’s the perfect place to find meaningful gifts and support regional artists.

Hitchcock Paper Co.

Located in the Riverwalk Shops overlooking the river, Hitchcock Paper Co. is a women-owned boutique stationery shop by Sarah Hitchcock Burzio. What began as a graphic design firm expanded in 2018 into this charming retail space featuring high-quality greeting cards, journals, planners, custom wedding invitations, and more, all carefully curated with thoughtful design in mind.

As the owner also launched Tiny Supply Co.: A sister store dedicated to educational and heirloom toys, books, and creative projects. Did we also mention she runs the Visit Occoquan accounts? Sarah’s influence extends even further into the Occoquan business scene and has made the town what is is today!

Leaf & Petal

Occoquan’s business directory includes plant and botanical boutiques like Leaf & Petal, which offer everything from potted plants and floral arrangements to tea-inspired wellness products and natural accessories, all perfect for gifting or relaxing self-care.

Shop, Explore, & Support

What makes Occoquan special is more than the businesses, it’s the people behind them. Many of the boutiques and storefronts lining Mill Street and others in the historic business district are owned and operated by women who have made their passions into thriving enterprises. When you visit Occoquan for a day of shopping, dining, or exploring the riverfront, you’re not just browsing unique finds, you’re supporting local women entrepreneurs who help keep the town’s lively spirit alive.

From art galleries and gift shops to beauty studios and specialty boutiques, taking the time to explore these women-run businesses during Women’s History Month (and beyond!) is a great way to honor entrepreneurship, creativity, and community.
