Although British General Charles Cornwallis’s army had surrendered to the Franco-American army at Yorktown in October 1781, British and Hessian forces remained in America. The main British army, under Sir Henry Clinton, still occupied New York City and needed to be monitored and contained. Most of the victorious Allied army returned north, but a portion of the French contingent remained behind until the following year. In July 1782, that French force of roughly 5,000 men began its trek north using the King’s Highway and encamped astride Quantico Creek on July 15. Over the next four days, it moved through Dumfries and Alexandria on its way to Boston before departing for the Caribbean. The war continued, as both sides awaited peace talks to conclude in Paris. There are two markers on the grounds of the museum. 18900 Jefferson Davis Hwy, Triangle VA 22172 38° 32’ 77′ N * 77° 20’ 50′ W – Road to Yorktown 38° 32’ 71′ N * 77° 20’ 53′ W - The Potomac Trail
