Armies used this mountain pass throughout the war. In July 1861, Confederate troops marched through the Gap on their way to Manassas. Confederate gen. Thomas “Stonewall” Jackson crossed the Gap en route to Bristoe and Manassas in August 1862. Marker located on Rt. 55 (John Marshall Highway) 38 49’ 24” N * 77 42’ 39” W
